Tip

My dear friend despised hearing people use sexual expletives for emphasis [e.g., 'fuck']. Invoke religion instead, she'd say - use the "damn" and "God Almighty" that show strength of conviction. -- Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan

Trail of distraction

You are watching the climax of a film. The character spills forth raw emotion, her expression desperate, voice unsteady, eyes smarting. You are wholly engaged in the scene, empathizing with her as if she were a mirror of yourself, your closest friend, or perhaps your lover. Then, a glistening trail slowly emerges from her nostril. The rate at which it advances downward is proportionate to your level of distraction. As time passes you become less invested in the character's conflict, devoting increasingly greater attention to her runny nose and anticipating the moment and manner in which it will be resolved.

Tell it like it is, part 2

The conjunction of Diet and Rite forms 'dietrite', which, incidentally, can also be the product of the conjunction of the words 'diet' and 'trite'. That the simple name 'Diet Rite' can express such fundamental truths about diets is incredible. And yet it all seems rather absurd; since when has honesty been the number one choice for marketing strategies?

Tell it like it is

Diet Rite is a surprisingly frank name for a diet product, a direct allusion to the fact that diets are a form of religion. And yet, because of the popularity of brand names that contain typos (e.g., Kool-Aid, Scotch-Brite), one will initially overlook this obvious connection and instead interpret Diet Rite as slang for 'Diet Right'.

On another note, the aesthetic of Diet Rite cherry cola personally brings to mind images of futurism and space travel. When I drink it I can't help but imagine that I'm in astronaut gear, which, ironically, makes one look fat.
